Nach der Promotion 1986 an der Universität Cambridge über alternative Bewegungen in West Berlin, unterrichtete Birgit Müller am Institut für Ethnologie der Freien Universität Berlin. Seit 1994 Mitglied des CNRS wirkte sie an der Gründung des LAIOS mit, dessen Mitglied sie seit 1995 ist. Von 1994 bis 1996 koordinierte sie am Centre Marc Bloch in Berlin ein Netzwerk für die Sozialanthropologie von Industriegesellschaften. Von 1996 bis 1999 arbeitete sie für den CNRS am Centre Français de Recherche en Sciences Sociales in Prag, wo sie ein internationales Netzwerk für die Anthropologie von Institutionen im Neuen Europa ins Leben rief. 1999 kehrte sie nach Paris zurück, wo sie in verschiedenen Forschungsnetzwerken mitwirkte: ACI Mesures de la mondialisation, 5. PCRDT Kulturelle Muster der europäischen Erweiterung, PRATO. Birgit Müller koordiniert das EASA Network for the Anthropology of International Governance
Forschungsgegenstände
Im Schwerpunkte ihrer Forschungen standen soziale und Umweltbewegungen in Deutschland und in der tschechischen Republik und die Untersuchung von Prozessen rapiden gesellschaftlichen Wandels in Osteuropa und Lateinamerika. Sie untersuchte Machtbeziehungen und Weltsichen in postsozialistischen Fabriken in Osteuropa. Aus diesen Untersuchungen heraus entwickelte sie ein besonderes Interesse für globale neoliberale Machtbeziehungen und ihre Auswirkungen auf den Lebens- und Arbeitsalltag. Zur Zeit vertieft sie diesen Forschungsschwerpunkt mit einem Projekt über Nahrung, Besitz und Macht: Agrartechnologien als globale Politik und lokale Praxis, für das sie Feldforschungen in der FAO und bei Bauern in Saskatchewan (Canada) und Carazo (Nicaragua) durchführt.

Programme Européen CULTPAT Cultural Patterns of European Enlargement
The comparative study, including two EU members, one associated and several applicant countries, completed by cross-country problem-oriented case studies, is based on a qualitative, trans-disciplinary social science approach, combining analytical skills from the fields of contemporary anthropology, political science and history of ideas. The research project aims to reconstruct the cultural patterns of identity constructions on a local/regional, national and European level since "1989/90" , used as frames for political orientation by various actors of the enlargement process. Special attention is drawn to these fields of political discourse and policy making, which are perceived through conflicting representations on the said levels and as a potential danger posed by or to the enlargement process.

This research group explores how to study practices of work, of enterprise and of administration by exploring the qualitative research methods that different social sciences developed for analyzing organized and spontaneous action. the group is interdisciplinary (history, sociology, administrative sciences, economy, anthropology).
