Lecturer in international Studies at Montreal University (2004-2006)

Lynda Dematteo contributes to research in the LAIOS since 1998, when she obtained a research grant. She is also a member of the Groupe de Recherches Pluridisciplinaires sur l’Italie Contemporaine (CERI).

In 2002, she taught sociology in Lille 3 University, and obtained in 2004, a Canadian grant from the CERI for a post-doctoral training at the Anthropology department in Montreal University, so as to develop her skills in the anthropology of the present.

In her PhD, De la bouffonnerie en politique. Ethnographie du mouvement Lega Nord en Bergamasca, Lynda Dematteo developed a reflection on the “nordisme” of Lega Nord militants, that relies on an anthropological analysis of inversion rituals. Since then, she tries to grasp the main characteristics of populist power by mobilising the methodological and conceptual resources of anthropology in new fieldworks, media networks and their political practices. She is particularly interested in new forms of censorship within the framework of the Berlusconian audiovisual monopoly, as well as in Roman journalists’ mobilisations defending pluralism.
Since 2005, she also works in Québec on the “confrontation radio” phenomenon, an anti-sovereign tribune in the national capital of the Province.
Within the LAIOS, she contributed to a multidisciplinary research project on amnesty laws in Europe, supported by the French Ministry for Justice (2003-2005) in which she studied how the memory of “lead years” is used in contemporary Italian debates.
