Association for the Dissemination of Greek Letters. Educational Grants for Female Teachers, “from the most significant Macedonian communities”. A multiply-readable practice (1880-1913)
Maria PREKA, Université de Crète
The Association for the Dissemination of Greek Letters (ADGL, Athens, 1869) is a par excellence form of public sociality, its main target audience being young people. At the same time, it is a typical example of vertical social relationships since its discourse, goals, and breadth of activity are programmatically addressed to non members. This presentation focuses on one of the practices of the Association, namely the scholarships granted to young girls from Macedonia in order to study in Athens and become teachers in the period between 1880-1913. Scholarships are the lens through which will be explored :
a.- the relation of ADGL with Greek-Orthodox populations ;
b.- the discourses of state institutions (such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and their relations with ADGL ;
c.- the boundaries between the « private » and the « state » ; and
d.- the relations of the Association with other groups (Philekpaideutike Etaireia).
